Trollhätte canal

Canal line from 1844

The canal from 1800 was a great and impressing enterprise and had an enorm impact on trade and industry around lake Vänern and on Gothenburg, but also for the whole country.
But in 1832 Göta Canal between the Baltic Sea and lake Vänern was inaugurated. That canal was built for bigger ships than Trollhätte canal and soon it was evident that Trollhätte canal had to be enlarged.
The works started in 1838, lead by Nils Ericson, and in 1844 the new canal line was ready for use. It was built as a spearate line beside the line from 1800 and it was in use until 1916.
