Tjuvholmssundet

The old fairway into Luleå harbour.

History:
This is the historical main fairway into Luleå. But due to landelevation it had to be dregded in the 18th century, and many times since then.
1773 the first dredgings were done.
Several times since then the fairway has been dredged and straightened as the ore ships got bigger and bigger. The last time in 1941 to 1945.
This twisting and difficult fairway have a dredged depth of 8,6 meters.
One of the most annoying facts about it, is that big ships cannot meet. So in 1900 a signalmast was built and signalguards employed to regulate traffic.
It was replaced as main fairway by the Sandgrönn route in 1998.
