The lock in Skellefte River

Lock at the Bergsby dam in Skellefte River.

Short history:
Since ages there has been some traffic with pleasure boats between Skellefteå town and the sea. When the Kvistforsen power plant was built in the 1960ies a dam was also built at Bergsby to ensure that there would always be water in the river at Skellefteå. To make it possible for pleasure boats to pass a lock was built in the damm.
The lock was built 1963 to 1964 and since then traffic has increased noticebly. The fairway is well marked. During the summer 2000 a lot of stones were cleared from the fairway, which made the passage much easier.
Now there are plans to enlarge the lock to make it possible for bigger boats to pass. The people in Skellefteå think this will increase tourism in the area. They plan to ask for help from the EU for this enlargement.

Stackgrönnan

At Stckgrönnan by Skellefte River outlet there are several canallike passages. These are mainly parts of the natural delta, but at several places there have been improvements made to simplify sailing.
