P A Tamm canal

Between Södra Dellen and Kyrksjön.

P A Tamm's canal was built in 1855 to 1860 for the trasnport of iron ore to Strömbacka works. It was built of stone. It was the works owner Petter Adolf Tamm who initiated the canal and also financed it.. He did however never get a chanse to see the canal completed as he died in 1856.
The work on the canal was led by captain S. P. Bergman at the central Road and Water Bureau. The building of this canal was considered extremely difficult, so when the canal was succeessfully completed Bergman was promoted major.
The canal and locks were built for boats 18,5 meters long and 3,6 meter wide.
The canal was used up to 1874, when a new railroad was built and all transports were transferred. Since then the canal has only been used periodically for timber driving. The last period of timber driving was from 1944 to 1965.

When the canal was built the lake Norra Dellen was lowered to the same level as the lake Södre Dellen, and the creek between them was dredged and widened to apropriate seize for the boats and barges to be used here.

Two locks were built. One at the actual Tamm's canal at Näsviken and the other at Hamre were a 75 meters long canal was built.
The lock at Näsviken got these dimensions: length between gates 26,8 meters, width 4,9 meters and depth 6,95 meters. Elevation 8 feet.
The lock at Hamre got these dimensions: length between gates 26,9 meters, width 5,7 meters and depth 4,8 meters. Elevation 14 feet.

In the initial plans P A Tamm also wanted to continue the canal till Iggsjön. From were he planned a 6 000 feet railroad to a harbour at Iggesund.
These plans was a threat to Hudiksvall town. If Tamm fulfilled his plans Hudiksvall would loose much of it's importancce and trade. In 1855 Hudiksvall planned a 16 kilometer railroad from town to Forsa church. The town council negotiated with Tamm and wanted him to pay parts of the railroad. Tamm refused to pay anything for the railroad, but agreed not to prolong the canal to Iggesund under certain conditions.
The building of the canal started in 1857 and the building of the railroad in 1856. They were both opened with big celebrations on July 16 in 1860.

Today the ownership of the canal is unclear. It is known that the Iggesund Company owns part of the canal. And they want to get rid of it. At the moment the Hudiksvall council does not seem eager to buy it.
