Midsundet canal

Canal planned between Hamrånge fjord and the sea.

History:
The Hamrånge fjord used be part of the sea, but now with only three creeks connecting to the sea. The three sounds were Sörsundet, Midsundet and Norrsundet.
Landelevation has made Hamrånge fjord a lake with sweet water and Midsundet has ceased. On a map from 1849 it was painted as a creek and as late as in the 1970ies there was a small, but still flow, of water here. This is now all gone.
Now a projact has started that aims at digging a canal through Midsundet and with a lock make it poosible for boats to pass through. This would create a unique opportunity to explore both sweetwater and saltwater archipelagoes very close to each others.

The new canal would be between 600 and 700 meters long and would be dug 1,5 meters deep. A lock would be needed, both to let boats pass, but allso to stop saltwater from getting into the fjord.

All three sounds show remnants of shipping from centuries ago. All have tracies of pilework and caissons used to stop foes from coming in.

- We have only just started this project, says Göran Bäuerle the initiator. I guess it will take us at least eight or ten years to finish it all.
