History:
Avafjärden from the Bay of Botnia to Lövånger in the province of Västerbotten was a very important route for shipping in days gone by. Finally landelevation cut Avafjärden away from the sea so shipping and transports had to find other routes. Ever since the cut-off in the 18th century the local people have wanted to restore the historic fairway with a canal.
Now a 600 meter canal and a lock is planned. The lock would take boats that are 25 meters long, 4,8 meters wide and with a draught of 2,2 meters.
The Avafjärden is 6 kilometers long from the canal to Lövånger village in the north.
To run this project Stiftelsen Avafjärdens Bevarande has been founded and this trust has started the planning. They are searching for all kinds of financial help and they hope for support from the EU too.
They hope to be able to start the works about 2010.
