Holm canal
Former canal between Gavleån and the sea in the center of Gävle.
History:
The canal was built in 1869 after the big city fire in Gävle. It replaced Lillån that previously hade been filled up. The canal was dug from Gavleån through the Fish Square, now the Harbour Square, and further to the sea.
During the 1960ies the part through the Harbour Square was filled up and in the 1980ies the part from the square to the sea too. Nowadays only the part from Gavleån to the Harbour Square still remains.
I have heard about plans to dig a new canal between Gavleån and the sea. This would be in a more southern location then Holm canal.
