About the canal and the lake there is a sad story to tell. This is from a book about Revsund parish by Per Persson:
At a parishmeeting i 1771 the vicar Nordenström demanded that a canal would be built through Havstonäset to save the lives of those who sail at this lake from home to church and for other reasons. In stormy weather it is very dangerous to sail at the lake.
"But there was no canal built until a great disaster hade struck the area.".
"On July 4th in 1780 the big churchboat from Malgå was wrecked close to Öster-Grimnäs in a heavy storm when sailing home from church. Everybody onboard, 15 people, drowned.
"This dreadful accident was in part caused by the fact that most of the men onboard were rather drunk. During those days it was common that every man brought a bottle of vodka for the sunday-trips to church. They drank much and started by the church. Very few men were sober when they got back home. It is told that this was the case on this occasion too. This Sunday they had a break at "Näbbsanden" at Hafstonäset by the start of the Grimnäs sound. The boat was drawn ashore.
"When it was time to continue the trip home, most women realized how dangerous it would be and refused to come along, but the men forced their women to stay onboard, even if one or two seems to have escaped by running away.
"The trip continued in the storm and through the Grimnäs sound. Just south of the Grimnäs village the catastrophy started.
"A young daugther of the then owner of the farm Öster-Grimnäs, Annika Mickelsdotter, tended goats at Fläckberget and became witness of the disaster. She heard screams from the lake and ran to the cliff. From there she saw the final shipwreck.
"Water started to get into the boat and all the women helped to keep the boat dry inside, but soon an extremely big wave came over the boat and draw the helmsman over board. Without helmsman the boat soon turned alongside the waves and was filled with water. Most of the people were washed over board and drowned. The others drowned onboard."
