The canals in Härnösand

The eastern kanal runs between Mellanön and Härnö. The western canal between Mellanön and the mainland. History:
The canals on both sides of Mellanholmen used to be natural fairways and has been used as such since long ago. Due to land elevation the fairways has been deepened to allow traffic.
The eastern canal was dredged and a stone quay was built in 1850. New works started in 1851, this time with economic support from the government and under the direction lieutenant Elworth. The works lasted for three years while the canal was deepened to 12 feet and widened to 30 feet. The canal was now 683 meters long.
During these years the first bridge between Mellanholmen and Härnö was built. It was a rather strange kind of bridge. It was replaced by a swikngbridge in 1890.
The main fairway today is the western canal. It was deepened in 1956 and is 300 meters long. The width is 11,5 meters and the depth 4,7 meters. There are two bridges over this canal. Both can be opened for boats.
