Eskil's canal

Between Stora and Lilla Rösö and the mainland this is a sheltered canal connecting the harbours of Önnered and Fiskebäck.

History:
There was an expantion boom in Gothenburg during the 1960ies, and during this the town got permission to fill up the old Önnered tip between Önnered and Fiskebäck and inside the two Rösö-islands. There were two verdicts from the water rights court,. One in 1964 and one in 1966 and the latter states that a channel must be left between the mainland and the Rösö islands. The width of this channel must be no less than 3 meters, the width at the bottom no less than 7 meters and the width at the water surface no less than 12meters at normal water level.
The official name was Önnered channel.
This channel was soon got filled with mud and by the end of the 1970ies the situation became urgent.
The fisherman Eskil Magnusson created the public opinion that forced the authorities to dredge the channel. In 1982 the channel was officially renamed Eskil's canal.

But the problem is back. In the early 21st century the depth was only 1,7 meters. More than a meter less than stipulated.
In 2002 public opinion demanded a new dredging, but so far only investigations has started.
