Motala

Motala town was founded by Baltzar von Platen more or less because he needed a town here for the canal work. He planned the town in fan-shaped form with the intersection in the bay outside. At that point there is now a fontän.
von Platen also founded Motala works, which together with Forsviks works is recognized as the birthplaces of Swedish manufacturing industry. Motala works were started to produce boats, machines, tools and all kinds of iron details needed for the canal. These works later developed to a big industry with a golden era in the early 20th century.
The canal company has it's head office in a pompous stonehouse by the harbour in Motala.
