Gammelstilla canal

Canal from Nedre Dammen to Ottnaren and further to Ältebosjön and via Ho creek to Torsåker church.

History:
The canal was built in 1860 by squire Gussander at Gammelstilla works. The aim was to make transports of goods easier.
From Nedre Dammen to Ottnaren the canal is 3,2 kilometers. The lock at Gammelstilla is 65 meters long and 4 meters wide. The draught is 2 meters. The difference in water level about 1 meter.
The route along the Ho creek much resembles the canal at Gammestilla. At one place there is a stream and a lock was built there, but later the barges were pulled up beside the lock instead. At another place close to Särstasjön the barges were also pulled through a stream.
At low waters barges were also pulled up at through a stream at the route to Ältebosjön.
In 1877 a steamer was bought. Built by Motala Verkstad it was named Nils Uhr and was in use here at least unto 1925. At 4 knots it managed to take three 10 ton barges from Gammelstilla to Torsåker in one day.
