The Amme channel
Ammerännan
Between the bays Falsterboviken in the south and Höllviken in the north the Amme channel runs through the smallest part of the Skanör isthmus.
Today this channel more looks like a tiny ditch, but it used to be a very important channel through which the sailing ships could avoid the dangerous waters outside Skanör and Falsterbo.
Historians are not shure if this has been a completely natural fairway, or if it has been widened and deepened by man. It is sure though, that this fairway was very important during the middle ages and that the ships of that time could pass through here. It is supposed that the ships were drawn through the channel.
At the Danish island Amager is a channel with the same name, thus in Danish - Ammerenden - which means the channel were ships are drawn through.
There has been at least one bridge across Amme channel. You can still see remnants of this close to the southern outlet.
