History:
In 1865 the county governor in the Nordland county suggested that a canal would be dug through the shallow sound between Årstein and Hinnøya. The sound could at that time only be used by very small rowing boats at spring tide. The passage south of Årstein is known to be difficult and tough in bad weather.
In 1867 a canal was surveyed the area and in 1868 th canal was proposed, but it had to wait until 1876 before the harbour managers proposal to the parliament was stopped. Another attempt was made in 1879 and money was granted during the years 1883 to 1887.
The 565 meter long canal was ready for use in 1887 and from then on it was frequently used, especially during the period of hering fisheries. In those days the seafaring trading ships were so small that they could use the canal too.
In the mid 1970ies a fixed bridge was built across the canal which stopped sailingboats from passing.
During the years the canal became more and more shallow and by the turn to the 21st century only very small rowingboats could use the canal. In 2003 the canal was made deeper and a new fixed bridge with a free height of 4 meters was built, so now the canal can be used in a reasonable way.
The water in the canal freezes during wintertime.
