Lock building
Building of Nesterinsaari canal was begun on the 1st of June 1876, together with lock of Kaltimo. The canal was built in a river fork. A dam was build, the area was emptied and dredged. The lock was built of logs although the place for the lock chamber was solid rock. The digging phase was finished in autumn 1877. The new Nesterinsaari canal was introduced in July 1879. However, the canal was ready for use in spring 1878 but the surrounding canals, Kaltimo and Saapaskoski, were not finished by then.

Building Master education
The canal keepers house was built in 1877. First, it was used as a school building where Building Masters were educated from 1877 to 1879 by Ivar Télen. Seven students graduated. These Building Masters expertise was needed in building of canals.

Nesterinsaari canal today
The current Kaltimo canal was built in the 1950s and Nesterinsaari canal was then covered with a dam. There is nothing left of the canal and even the former location is difficult to find. The name Nesterinsaari is seen in maps but it refers to the island where the current Kaltimo canal is located.
