Mustio locks
Mustion sulut

There is only sparse information about these locks, but it is probable that there was one or two locks in Mustio during the 18th century. Mustio is in Karis by Mustionjoki river.
Henrik Johan Krej bought Mustio works in 1736. The ore was transported from Sweden in boats and reloaded to barges at Åminne. These barges were pulled up Mustiojoki river to the works. In 1744 Krej bought a part of a mine in Helsingfors. So he needed a new blast furnace.
Krej chosed to build this at Mjölnärby close to Åkerfors by Mustiojoki river. He started to dredge the streams in the river. He built a 60 meter long and 1,2 to 1,8 meter deep canal trough the stream and a vinsch to pull the barges uppstreams.
In a letter from 1745 Krej writes that he has built two locks between Mustio bruk and the sea. Enforcement officer Hougberg writes in a report that Krej has built a damm and lock.
The lock, or locks, were probably built at Åkerfors in 1744 to 1745.
It is also known that Krej planned locks at Billnäs.
Krej did not get privilage to build a new blast furnace. It is likely that the locks deteriorated quickly and enforcement officer Hougberg writes about that in a report 1755.
