Jomalvik canal
Jomalvikin kanava

The canal connects Jomalviken to Edesviken about 4 kilometers south of Ekenäs center.
It was John Österholm, member of the parliament, that in 1934 asked the parliament for permission and help with this canal. The aim of the canal was to give some of the local people shorter way to the municipality center, Some of the people would get between 9 and 12 kilometer shorter way.
Money was granted in 1937 and by the end of the same year the works started and was performed by released prisoners.
When the war started in 1939 the canalworks were stopped.
When the works started again in 1948 much of the old work had to be redone. The canal was opened for traffic in 1950 and inaugerated on June 20th that year.
The fairway to and from the canal is only 0,6 meter deep today. The canal is in pretty bad shape. It is 470 meters long, 3,8 meters wide and 1 meter deep. But it was 1,7 meter deep when new. The free height in the canal is 4,5 meters.
