Grabbe canal
Grabben kanava

This canal was built during the middle ages and very little is known about it. It is in Karis in Western Nyland.
The canal passes through the Lojo ridge at it's lowest point in the center of todays Karis. You can still clearly see the canal line on the southern side of the railroad. Most likely this was a part of a 500 to 600 meters fairway between Svartån to Kiilaneva that in those days were the northern shores of lake Läppträsket.
According to some historical sources the canal was built at the same time as the Raseborg castle as the building material for the castle was transported this way from the mainland.
Some local historical sources states that the canal never was completed as the waterlevel at that time was lower then the bottom of the canal. There could never have been enough water for sailing in the canal. It is evident though, that the canal was used for pulling boats from Svartån to the river leading to the sea.

The canal seen from the railroad towards north. It is about one meter deep and a couple of meters wide.

It is very hard to see the canal north of Bangatan as vegetation is very tight.

A sign by Bangatan shows where the canal is.
